Entry #7 - Soot Formed At High Temperature And Pressure

Large rod-like structures imaged with scanning electron microscopy – energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). Purple is carbon and light purple is silicon. Other colors, green and blue, represent different impurities in the soot, including oxygen and aluminum. These particles were some of the ones formed during a series of high temperature and pressure experiments performed and imaged at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) as a part of an exploratory research project led by the Earth and Environmental Sciences (EES) Division focused on soot formation processes under extreme conditions.
